As the connection seems to be stemmed from the master servers setting up your account details and not the individual servers, extending the connection time out period really helps:

Drop down the console and enter:

seta cl_connectionAttempts "30"

This makes your client wait longer before dropping.

I usually get in @ 20 seconds.
