how about two packs of cards...

you get a card as you come in, and tehn sit on the table/place corresponding to your card?

that way it gets people to mingle more, although can be abused through the use of swapsies :(

Dym
might work...

The immediate problems with many of these ideas is that they interfere too much with what the paying attendees want to do. Physically breaking up groups of friends etc is not on, and having randomised teams whereby you could end up with disparate players at opposite ends of the hall makes it no different from playing online or at a Multiplay event (where players may as well be in different countries they are so spread out).

You are never going to get a solution that will please everyone, and you are never going to get entirely equal teams unless you run exhaustive trials to guage everyone's ability (also not practical).

I think Jason is on the right track with the tables idea. Doing blue vs red and relying on the pot-luck of which colour table people end up on is probably going to be the best compromise. That way groups of friends can stay together physically, you still have an element of control in that clans can be on opposing colours, and you can organise it so that clan LANSE is split between Blue and Red, while still being in the same half of the room.

Hopefully that makes sense, but suffice to say - IMHO, go with the blue v red tables idea.

as people arrive give them a number in order from 1.

the first person to arrive gets 1
second 2
third 3 and so on......

when all 40/50 people arrive odds on 1 team evens on another  :?

p.s. give it them on paper so they dont forget  :P

I'm going for the red vs blue option.

I've cunningly arranged the tables to split up big groups
i5-2500k
Asus P8P67
2x 4gb DDR3 1600 hz OCZ
1 x Dell Perc 6/i
4 x Samsung 2TB (raid 5)
1 x WD VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS
Asus 5870 1gb PCI-E
